The only water based pitch to be constructed in Ireland this year was officially opened by the Mary Mitchell OConner TD in a festival of hockey on Sunday at Rathdown school.
The plaudits went to the organising committee for the commitment and vision to bring home a first class 'mini stadium' to South Side! This was underscored by speeches from the local TD and Trevor Watkins Chair of Monkstown Hockey who are based at the school have a facility capable of hosting international ties and will serve both school and hockey club as the sport continues to develops around these excellent facilities.
Some very competitive matches were observed to stamp the official seal of approval on the pitch. Despite the weather almost neutralising the need for any irrigation to water the pitch the substantial enthusiastic crowd were thoroughly entertained by Irish select teams battling it out against Monkstown in both the men's and ladies ties.
