Sports Labs on the Move

Sports Labs have announced that they have moved to new premises.

Eric O’Donnell, Managing Director said: "This move represents a significant investment for the Company, involving the installation of a new Laboratory facility, providing more floor space, and new testing equipment to enhance the range of services the Company provides to clients. This, together with recent additions to the Company’s management team, highlights our comment to continue developing the Company with a view to providing a more professional, comprehensive service to our clients."

"The new Office is supported by a full-time administrative function thereby improving our response times to enquiries. This major development means that Sports Labs is in excellent shape to provide the service our customers have come to expect now and in the future."

To give comprehensive nationwide coverage Sports Labs have engineers based in Bristol, Durham, Birmingham and London.

Sports Labs Merger with Mike Abbott Associates

Sports Labs are pleased to announce that the Consultancy practice of Michael Abbott Associates has been merged with that of Sports Labs with immediate effect.

The merger brings together two well established and highly regarded consultancy firms to form one integrated company that will continue to be known as Sports Labs Ltd.

The merger strengthens the management team at Sports Labs and means that Mike Abbott, an experienced chartered civil engineer, will be retained by Sports Labs as Principal Consultant bringing broad based experience of the sports construction industry to Sports Labs.

Eric O’Donnell, Managing Director of Sports Labs made this statement,

“Mike Abbott has long been regarded by members of the sports construction industry as a leading expert at the forefront of synthetic sports and athletics surfaces construction. His depth of knowledge in this field is highly regarded by all sports governing bodies concerned with synthetic surfaces. We are delighted that he is joining the team at Sports Labs.”

The services currently offered by Sports Labs include the following: design and specification of sports surfaces projects, construction project management, health and safety planning supervision services, together with sports surfaces product and field testing, expert advice on surfaces, consultancy with regards to products and their performance in the field.

Mike Abbott is a Chartered Civil Engineer with over forty years' experience in the construction industry. Initially involved in the design and construction of roads and bridges with Local Authorities, and then in contracting, he moved into the specialist sports surfacing sector thirty years ago. In this field Mike has a very wide experience of synthetic sports surfaces, including pitches, athletics tracks and tennis courts.
Mike Abbott is Technical Chairman of the Sports and Play Construction Association (SAPCA) and represents the industry on BSI Technical Committee PRI/57, which is currently involved in the preparation of the new European (CEN) Standard for sports surfaces.
A former Chairman of the Tennis Court Constructors Federation and the Industry Training Organisation, Mike Abbott conducts training courses on behalf of many organisations throughout the UK, (including the IOG, UK Athletics, the LTA as well as SAPCA) on topics such as the design, construction and maintenance of sports facilities with synthetic surfaces. Mike is also a qualified NVQ assessor.
Mike Abbott Associates has worked with several universities in the UK on research and development projects, related to sports surfacing and has completed technical projects for Sport England on facility related topics.

Eric O’Donnell is Managing Director of Sports Labs Ltd and a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a graduate of Heriot-Watt University (MPhil).
He is Chairman of the Professional Services Group of the Sport and Play Construction Association and regularly gives papers at seminars dealing with the testing and project management aspects of sports facility construction.
Eric has been involved with sports surfaces since 1989 and has provided many clients with expert witness testimony and technical reports concerning product faults, litigation due to injuries sustained when using sports surfaces and dispute resolution.
